On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), in collaboration with a global energy trading company (BGN), inaugurated two giant gas tankers (VLGC) made in South Korea that are very environmentally friendly, named VLGC Pertamina Gas Tulip and VLGC Pertamina Gas Bergenia, which are optimized to transport LPG both domestically and internationally.
Tulips and Bergenia were chosen because they have unique meanings for PIS and BGN. Tulip symbolizes majesty, and Bergenia symbolizes strength. The PIS fleet now totals 97 vessels, including 61 tankers operating overseas.
“We plan to add 6 VLGCs in 2024, starting with 2 VLGCs in the beginning of the year, which will also strengthen PIS' position in the global LPG transportation business.” Yoki, PIS Chief Executive Officer.
One of the main advantages of the VLGC Pertamina Gas Bergenia and VLGC Pertamina Gas Tulip is that the vessels are environmentally friendly as they have two dual fuel tanks that maximize the use of gas and low-sulfur fuel. In addition, VLGC Pertamina Gas Bergenia and VLGC Pertamina Gas Tulip have the latest technology that allows for more efficient use of fuel, increasing vessel speed by up to 16 percent.
“The presence of these two VLGC vessels will certainly improve Pertamina Group's ability to secure energy supplies to support national energy security. Their cutting-edge technology is proof of Pertamina Group's commitment to sustainable business," said Pertamina CEO Nicke Widyawati in a written statement on Monday, January 15, 2024.
With the presence of these two giant gas tankers, PIS has increased its expansion routes to the global market, from initially having only 11 international routes in 2021 to now increasing to 50 routes.
